About

Dr. Mariam Ashraf, B.Sc., D.C.

Dr. Ashraf grew up in Edmonton and has always had an interest in healthcare.  She graduated from the University of Alberta in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, specializing in Psychology.  She then continued on to chiropractic school at CMCC in Toronto for four years.

Since graduating from chiropractic school in 2006, Dr. Ashraf has earned certifications in soft tissue techniques and Kinesiotaping for muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries.  She has had extensive volunteer experience in addition to working with sports teams such as the Toronto Lynx soccer team and the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs hockey team.

Dr. Ashraf also loves educating children on posture and has presented to elementary students in the Edmonton area as well as in Tanzania, Africa.

Dr. Ashraf particularly has a special interest in treating TMJD (jaw pain and disorders) and applies dental and physiotherapy techniques to her well-rounded approach to assess and treat jaw disorders.

Chiropractors in Canada are required to fulfill approximately 20 hours per year (depending on the province) of continuing education.  Dr. Ashraf has completed many courses over her 18-year career, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Attended the AAOP (American Academy of Orofacial Pain) Conference in 2013 and presented at the May 2019 AAOP Conference in San Diego.

  • Completed the Somatic Senses functional treatment course (specifically for chiropractors to assess and treat the jaw) and in 2024 updated her jaw treatment skills with a course in Toronto held by MSk Plus.

  • Attended monthly meetings with the craniocervical (including jaw) pain MASCCP study club in Edmonton from 2015 - 2019.

  • Completed training in February 2019 to become G.L.A.D. Back certified and is qualified to teach and run group classes for patients with chronic mechanical lower back pain.

  • Became certified in 2019 to run the 6-week spinal stenosis boot camp program that was developed at Mt. Sinai to help patients who suffer from spinal stenosis that affects their daily life.

Dr. Ashraf is also highly trained to perform gait and biomechanical assessments for custom orthotics.
